Operation Overstory FAQ

Am I guaranteed a tree?

Operation Overstory allows you to request a tree but it does not guarantee that you will receive a tree. The program is driven by demand — your request will be put on a list in the order it is received. As more funding becomes available, we continue with distribution of discount codes.

Do I have to have sustained tornado damage to request a tree?

This program is designed for tornado-affected areas only. The website will accept requests based on zip codes and parks that were severely affected by the tornado’s path.

I'm not in the affected zip codes, but I still need a tree.

If you live outside of these designated areas and you were affected by the tornado’s path (i.e. you lost trees), you can still request a discount code, but we will request more information about your situation during the request process.

How do I order a tree for free?

If your request is funded by donations, you will receive a discount code via email to use for our online “Farm-to-Yard” tree sale. This program conveniently delivers trees to your household. Discount codes will be dispersed as funding becomes available.

How large are the new trees?

Your tree will be large! It will be at least 1.5” trunk diameter and usually between 8-10 feet tall.

Which types of tree can I order?

Your discount code will only cover the cost of the purchase of a large canopy tree species (i.e. oak, tulip poplar, red maple, bald cypress, etc.) through our "Farm-to-Yard" Tree Sale. Small canopy tree species (i.e. dogwoods, redbuds, crepe myrtles, etc.) are not a part of Operation Overstory’s mission.

When will I get my new tree?

Tree deliveries will begin this fall and continue through the winter months. The best time to plant a tree in Nashville is in the fall and winter.

Is tree planting included?

Tree planting is not included in this program. You can plant the tree on your own (using our detailed planting guidance) or add planting to your online order during checkout for an additional cost.
