Gift a Tree This Holiday Season!
Give the gift of a tree this holiday season and show someone you appreciate them with a beautiful, long-lasting present whose meaning and impact will continue to grow over the years. We at the Nashville Tree Conservation Corps are making tree-giving as simple as possible through our tree sale! In this article, we’ll go over how it works and why the gift of nature is a wonderful way to cultivate new connections between people and the environment.
Gift a Tree With NTCC
It’s never been easier to buy a tree! Through the Nashville Tree Conservation Corps’ tree sale, residents of Davidson County and surrounding Nashville areas can give a new tree to a loved one with a gift card in an amount of their choice toward any species. Just in time for the holidays, we’re pleased to offer a special limited-time offer: From now until January 15, the purchase of a Tree Gift Card will be accompanied by a downloadable gift certificate that you can print out and mail to your chosen recipient.
NTCC partners directly with a local tree broker to make trees accessible to residents at a lower price by cutting out the retail markup. NTCC makes no profit from these sales, so you only pay for the tree. Tree delivery is included in the price, and it can be planted at delivery for an additional fee. Of course, residents can plant the tree themselves as part of the holiday celebrations! Keep in mind that trees are usually delivered four to six weeks from purchase (check out our delivery calendar for specific dates).
For those on your list who may not have a place for a new tree, there are other ways that you can give an arboreal gift this season:
Donate a tree to be planted somewhere in Nashville by the NTCC.
Make a financial donation to support our mission to promote, preserve, protect, and plant Nashville’s tree canopy.
Canopy care comes in many forms. Each contribution to managing the landscape is a valuable act that has a real impact on an ecosystem and its communities.
The Benefits of Planting a Tree
When we plant and maintain trees, they contribute many important benefits to the local area. Trees provide ecosystem services such as air filtration and shade that make an area comfortable to live in for both people and wildlife. Trees add beauty to an area with their greenery, unique forms, and seasonal variation of flowers, fruits, autumnal coloration, and cool-season bare branches or evergreen fullness.
Trees also offer other valuable assets for people. Beautiful and comfortable conditions create a higher quality of life for residents, and we form relationships with trees through memories and recreational activities near and among them, whether at home, traveling through the neighborhood, or in a nature preserve. In addition to sentimental value and mental health benefits, trees in good condition increase property values as they mature.
Planting a Tree in Winter
Not only is the holiday season a great opportunity to give a tree as a gift, but it’s also the best time to plant one! Many trees go dormant in the cool months of the year, and their energy is held in their roots. Giving a tree time to spread its roots before spring will help it stay soundly in place when warmer weather arrives.
It’s normal for a new tree not to sprout leaves in its first spring; it will be establishing itself over the first few years in its new place, with no visible activity over year one. Some light, creeping growth in the second year will be followed by a leap into action in the third year. Over this crucial period of three years, it’s particularly important to water a tree regularly for good establishment. Check out our care guidelines on planting, watering, and monitoring a new tree.
