Description: The buckeye tree is a gorgeous understory tree that should be planted more often. This variety is a red blossom variety and is a spring hummingbird’s favorites! The flower resembles that of crepe myrtle plum of flowers. The tree gets its name from the pods and the nuts it produces which have a white-ish gray scar that resemble a deer’s eye. This particular buckeye species is a small growing species that will get a maximum of 20 feet tall making it an ideal tree to squeeze into places that have space or utility constraints. Provided you have the right conditions for it to grow happily, this tree is a must have addition to your yard.
Special Growing Considerations: The buckeye is an understory tree meaning it likes part-shade with exposure to direct sunlight for part of the day. It prefers moist soil as well. The tree won’t tolerate periods of drought and scorching full fun , and exposure to these conditions will increase the tree’s mortality. The buckeye is not a tree that should be planted near asphalt and concrete but is an excellent tree for a neighborhood yard in the shade of another tree or a house where it doesn’t dry out completely.
