These trees produce substantial dense foliage that is perfect for screening and produce an abundance of plump red berries that look so beautiful in the winter time and are beloved by winter birds. The ‘Dan Fenton’ variety grows vigorously compared to other holly tree varieties and it keeps pyramidal form. You can keep these trees bushy for screening or trim them up to be a tree form as they grow bigger. Special Growing Considerations: The American Holly is a tough tree but don’t plant it in drought prone areas. It prefers to grow in areas where it is regularly moist or normal moisture levels. It would also do best in more loamy soils. The tree will struggle more if planted in hard red clay type soils. You can amend soil to help it with peat moss or store bought top soil.
