Description: The ‘Taylor’ variety of Eastern Red Cedar grows in a columnar shape and is an excellent substitute for the Italian Cypress tree. We recommend this tree over the Italian Cypress because it is better suited to Nashville’s climate. This is an excellent tree for tight spaces and in-between houses. They can be planted tightly together to form a thick tall, evergreen privacy screen.
The eastern red cedar, in general, has a place in Nashville and, well, pretty much anywhere in America because there is little that detours this amazing tree from growing. Between cracks in asphalt or an open wild field, you can find the eastern red cedar growing. This tree is so common it is often overlooked in the landscape, and we’d like to change that because it’s a beautiful screening tree. This tree also makes an excellent food source for birds who need all the help they can get these days to grow their families. (Bird populations are sharply declining)
Growing Considerations: The eastern red cedar is often thought of as a tank of a tree and is pretty tough but doesn’t like to be transplanted. We offer these trees in a 4 or 6 feet tall size with a larger than normal root ball, which ensures successful transplantation. If you grow apple trees in your yard or your neighbors have apple trees, this tree is not a good choice because it can pass on cedar-apple rust. Once established, this tree is virtually unstoppable. It is drought tolerant, loves clay soil, loves sandy soil, loves loamy soil, can be a little wet, can be a little drier… it’s a tree that thrives wherever it grows!
