Description: This fast-growing evergreen can grow as much as three feet per year. Fully mature trees can be as tall as 60 feet, and as wide as 20 feet. The virtually maintenance-free Green Giant has very small, glossy, scale-like leaves that darken in color or bronze in the winter. When grouped together Green Giants make an excellent privacy screen and wind block, as well as reduce noise. The leaves have a pleasant aroma when squeezed and its botanical name, thuja, comes from the Greek word, perfume. Green Giant’s beautiful green leaves and pleasing fragrance make the perfect cuttings for winter holiday decoration. This tree is also tough! It resists most insects, diseases, and periodic drought. It is more deer resistant than other arborvitaes and will withstand heavy ice and snow. This is a great tree for birds as the dense foliage provides nesting sites and protection from weather.
Growing Considerations: This tree likes full sun but will tolerate some shade. It needs at least 4 hours of direct sunlight each day. It grows in a broad range of soil types from acidic loamy to sandy to clay alkaline soils. It does not do well in very wet, soggy areas.
