Description: The loblolly pine is the fastest growing pine tree in the southeast. Nashville is located just at the tip of the Loblolly’s native range but as climate change occurs, Nashville’s winters are now mild enough to not impact this tree’s survival. The loblolly will grow much taller than it is wide. As this tree matures you will only see a large trunk at the base and all the needles at the top. While this tree is bushy and young, it will make excellent privacy screening. The loblolly specimens we have seen growing around Nashville are beautiful and uniquely shaped when given plenty of sun. A great quality about this tree is that it eventually grows to provide shade without all the lower limbs. Planting several of them in an area will eventually produce a beautiful evergreen shaded open yard.
Special Growing Considerations: This tree likes hot and humid growing conditions. It’s found often growing in wetland areas, but it can tolerate moderate drought conditions. It prefers acidic loamy soils, so think about amending your soil with pine needles, pine bark, or peat moss, especially if you have dense clay soil. This tree also sheds its lower limbs as it grows bigger in a process called “self-pruning”, and so don’t plant this tree within 20 feet of structures because once it has achieved a significant height it can drop large limbs.
