Description: Graceful Sweetbay Magnolias seem to glimmer when the silvery-green undersides of their leaves rustle in the wind. In the Spring, the intoxicating scent of creamy white, lemon-scented flowers can be appreciated from hundreds of yards away. In Nashville, Sweetbays are delightful year round with their evergreen foliage and smooth gray bark which has the distinctive fragrance of bay laurel spice. With pruning, the Sweetbay can be trained into a multi-trunked shrub or left intact with a wide column. Sweetbay Magnolia also makes for an excellent focal point tree or planted in a cluster.
Growing Considerations: The Sweetbay is a low maintenance Magnolia and grows easily in acidic, medium to wet soils. It will also tolerate urban air pollution. Do not let the sweetbay magnolia dry out in periods of drought. Do not plant this in an area that will become extremely dry. They tend to flourish in partial sun conditions.
